Abstract
In an idealized model of northern hemisphere's wintertime atmospheric circulation, it is shown that the Northern Annular Mode arises from an annularpattern on a rotating aqua-planet and is modified to a zonally asymmetric pattern by land-sea contrasts and orography, connected with the localizationof transient baroclinic activity.
