Abstract

DNA repeats are characteristic features of all eukaryotic genomes. two fundamental types of repeats can be distinguished: tandem repeats and interspersed repeats. Tandem repeats are of outstanding usefulness in population genetics, mapping, and forensic studies. In the era of completely sequenced genomes it becomes more and more obvious that for different repeat types genomic densities, length characteristics, and distribution differ remarkably among different taxa, making them a useful tool for comparative genomics. In our project, we searched for tandem repeats in the genome of Daphnia pulex and analyzed the frequencies, densities, length characteristics, and distances of different repeat types and of different pattern size ranges. These characteristics are compared to the three model species, Drosophila melanogaster, Apis mellifera, and Homos sapiens
