Abstract
When mesh resolution is refined to allow eddies, their dynamics equilibrate only some distance inside the refined areas. (1) The implication is that (i) there is a zone where simulated variability will be either too low or too high and that (ii) relatively large refinement areas should be used, similar to nesting. (2) We propose that the shape of refined areas can be adjusted based on a low-pass pattern of the observed variability. Scaled biharmonic viscosity is sufficient to warrant smoothness of solutions. Momentum advection implementation affects smoothness of vertical velocity.
