Abstract

Climate change is destabilizing permafrost landscapes, leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions and changes in hydrology. However, permafrost thaw is affected by surface and subsurface properties and processes, all of which are potentially linked with each other. Yet, no simple standardized protocol exists for measuring permafrost thaw and these processes/properties in a linked manner. Within the framework of the T-MOSAiC action group “permafrost thaw”, we developed a simple protocol, which can be possibleable to be used by experts, non-specialists, and citizen scientists’, to collect standardized data and metadata. Data on thaw depth are collected along transects across landscapes together with land surface and subsurface parameters of snow, vegetation, soil and water level. A mobile, user friendly App facilitates the data entry of field measurements and provides easy means for standardized data collection and documentation. Through this new T-MOSAiC permafrost study thaw protocol, we aim to standardize documentation of assess climate change impacts on permafrost.
